DCW: Developmental Disabilities (DD) AHCCCS has instituted training and testing requirements for Direct Care Workers (DCW) who provide direct care services (Attendant Care, Personal Care and Homemaker) to Arizona Long Term Care System (ALTCS) members residing in their own home. Beginning October 1, 2012, all AHCCCS provider agencies of direct care services must utilize DCWs who have passed the required competency tests within 90 days of hire unless otherwise exempt from the training and testing requirements (e.g. Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse and Certified Nurse Aide). The testing records are portable or transferable from one employer to another. DCWs do not have to pass the tests again unless they have experienced a lapse from working in the direct care field for a minimum of two years. In this course, you will learn about how pain affects the elderly and common causes and types of pain in the elderly.  We will also discuss why pain may not be fully managed for elderly members and how you can help members cope with pain.

This introductory class reviews how to begin working with a new member before working on program goals. The course serves as a refresher on how to build positive relationships, gain instructional control, and assess for pre-requisite attending skills. This course is recommended for providers working with members of all ages for continuing education.

Providing care for another individual is one of the most rewarding things you can do.  It takes knowledge, empathy, compassion, strength, and much more.  In this training, we will show you the proper ways to provide personal care and how to provide care with dignity and respect.  Topics include: communication, infection control, caregiver code of conduct, personal choice, skin anatomy, oral care, bathing and more.

This course will provide you with an overview of PBS so that you are better equipped to analyze a member’s behavior, understand the function of their behavior, and to develop and implement a PBS plan.

This is part one of a 4-part series, Coordination of Care. Please be sure to complete the series with Part 2 -Understanding Behavior, Part 3 – Managing Behaviors and Part 4 – Member Rights. In this session, you’ll learn how multifaceted coordination of care can be and we’ll equip you with the skills needed to ensure positive outcomes through increased efficiency.

]This is part two of a 4-part series. In this session, Understanding Behavior, we will cover behavior basics, or Behavior 101 if you will. The information will not be provided with a particular age group or population in mind. Rather, it will be a foundational understanding of all things behavior. Later, with this knowledge, your teams will be better equipped to determine the strategies best applied to a particular age group or specific population to proactively work with members to provide excellent person-centered care with the individual needs of each member in mind.

This is part three of a 4-part series. In this session, Proactive and Reactive Strategies for Managing Behaviors, we will dive into proactive prevention strategies to minimize the risks of behaviors occurring, as well as how to de-escalate behaviors should they arise, or what we’ll call reactive strategies. When you finish Part 3, you’ll have a handful of effective and evidence-based behavior strategies you can share with your team to ensure the quality of care that all members deserve.
